The tandem is a type of bicycle on which two people can ride.

In the context of language learning, this term refers instead to the meeting between two people of different native speakers who want to learn each other's language, conversing half of the time in each other's language and the second half in each other's language. This approach assumes that both people already possess some basic knowledge of the other language. Therefore, in order to be able to participate in a "Tandem" it is generally considered essential to reach the advanced A2 level.

With the new educational arrangement, and in addition to the "Erasmus+" stays, TANDEM offers students an additional opportunity to use the languages they study, practicing them in the context of direct contact.

For this reason, the Foreign Languages and Literatures Unit, of the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Industries, is proposing the Skype Tandem Project, through which the meeting between the two people moves to the virtual space of the network, taking advantage of the possibilities of the Skype service. Instead of meeting in reality, the two partners meet in front of the computer, each at home, at a mutually agreed upon time. Likewise, the students themselves individually and independently determine the topics of their conversation.

What must one do to participate?

At the beginning of the academic year, during classes in their Language and Translation courses and language exercises taught by readers, students are informed about the Skype Tandem project.

The project consists of 10 meetings lasting one hour each on a weekly basis. The talks are conducted half in Italian and half in the other language. At the end of each meeting both students draft a brief summary of the conversation in the other language and send it to the partner, who will make corrections where necessary and send it back corrected. At the beginning of the next meeting the corrections made are discussed.

The 'pairs' between Parma students and foreign students individually will be communicated. The partners will contact each other via email to schedule the first meeting on Skype or other platforms (Zoom, Meet, Teams).

At the end of the project, the UNIPR student will send a report containing all the meetings to the contact person of the language for which he or she did the tandem.

The advantages

The student will have the opportunity to practice the studied language in a real-life interview situation with a native speaker, which is essential for both correct pronunciation and the acquisition of adequate and current vocabulary.
