From 2017 the Certification of Latin Language also kicks off in Parma, which for the Emilia-Romagna region sees our University involved jointly with the Universities of Bologna and Ferrara. The Certification of Latin on the national territory is relatively recent: it was initially implemented with a series of pilot initiatives in some Italian regions such as Lombardy, the province of Palermo, Liguria, the autonomous province of Trento and partially Veneto, to consolidate then on most of the national territory. The prerequisite for these initiatives was a memorandum of understanding, renewed in January 2023, between USRER (Regional School Office of Emilia-Romagna) and CUSL (Consulta Universitaria di Studi Latini), which is the body that brings together Latin professors from all Italian universities and also the certifying body recognized by the Ministry.

The ultimate goal is the elaboration of a single Certification model, which unambiguously defines the levels, the required competencies, the methods of assessment and verification of the required competencies, the forms of expendability, while elaborating didactic models for the preparation for the Certification tests. The realization of this unique model may lead to the definition of a national memorandum of understanding with the MUR that establishes the general modalities for carrying out and achieving the Certification, a document that can be recognized throughout the country and that has expendability in the university sphere (e.g., as part of entrance tests), as well as as as educational credits within the school.

Tests for Certification will be held at each of the university hubs. A maximum number of 180 students from high schools in Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and their provinces will be admitted to Parma.

The committee responsible for the organization and correction of the tests consists of professors Mariella Bonvicini, Alex Agnesini, Simone Gibertini (DUSIC Department), by professors Viviana Menoni (former professor of Latin at the Liceo Scientifico "Marconi" in Parma), Chiara Giublesi (Liceo "Gioia" in Piacenza), Enrica Fontani (Liceo "Ariosto-Spallanzani" in Reggio Emilia), Angela Santi (Liceo "Romagnosi" in Parma), Viviana Tanzarella (Convitto "Maria Luigia" in Parma).

Mode and structure of the tests

Latin Language Certification, like that of foreign languages, is awarded to students who demonstrate language proficiency at various levels. To this end, the tests are divided into 4 levels: A1-A2, B1-B2, conforming to the model of the recent international project Eulalia (the activation of a C level, professionalizing, is also planned in the future).
