What is meant by blended courses
This is a training course that combines the integrated use of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and traditional classroom teaching, in accordance with Ministerial Decree No. 47 of 30 January 2013 and subsequent amendments.
The teaching/learning process for these courses is integrated, combining face-to-face sessions and online sessions. There is therefore an alternation between classroom lessons and remote activities carried out in specially designed environments.
A blended course involves, therefore, the combination of these activities:
- face-to-face classes, the so-called classroom training, which follows the method of traditional teaching, classes are delivered within the classrooms of the University of Parma
- distance attendance classes held in "classrooms or virtual spaces," delivered through the use of technology (audio, video, electronic texts, etc..) with materials designed and created specifically for this use
- self-study activities through the use of digital content, online sources, manuals, texts or free resources
- collaborative learning activities within the learning community, through the use of chats, videoconferences, webinars, forums, mailing lists, newsletters, etc.
Activities all appropriately guided and carried out under the supervision of the professor in charge of the course and the reference tutor.
These courses allow for a type of approach to teaching that improves involvement and participation in the educational process, addresses potential disadvantages for working students, students away from the hub or students with disabilities by improving the possibilities of attending, in an alternative way, classes, or feeling an integral part of university life. The university thus seeks to adapt to the needs of its users. Another qualifying aspect is the possibility of constant monitoring of the level of learning through the analysis of reports on the students' progress so as to be able to intervene effectively in cases and moments of difficulty in the university path.
What degree courses are involved and what teachings are available
The degree courses involved are:
Specific information on the organization of courses and the teachings available in blended mode is published on the degree course websites.
Who the blended courses are aimed at
Everyone can take advantage of this mode of course use; there are no specific requirements, only possession of a high school diploma valid for university inscription, or already being inscribed in one of the courses involved, is necessary.
Differences with a traditional degree course and the services offered
There are no major differences from a traditional degree course; in fact, the content, professors and exam methods are the same as in-person courses; the main difference from traditional attendance is the services offered:
- e-learning platform
- an "online secretary"
- tutoring service
- relationship with professors
In blended courses, students interact through the use of the Elly e-learning platform, through which it is possible to attend courses online, consult and access course materials, participate in forums, and consult educational calendars (class schedule, exam calendar). They can access all these functions, from any device with an Internet connection capable of connecting to the platform. To facilitate meetings with course professors or tutors, the student can book a meeting via videoconference. The booking for the meeting can be made, if already enrolled in the course, through the e-learning platform.
What is tutoring office
Each student is assisted by a tutor in online mode; this figure is the reference point for the student. The tutor is a ‘guide’ who follows the student throughout their training journey. The tutor's duties are:
- Continually maintaining the relationship with students, with online meetings (chat, forum, email, videoconference)
- Fostering relationships between students and professors
- Supporting the student in orientation, choice and definition of programme of study
- Offering advice both technical on the use of the platform, as well as didactic for the use of online courses
- Supporting students on a relational level throughout their studies, to avoid and prevent cases of dispersion due to problems that may arise over time
- Monitor the student's activity, providing feedback on the course of study
- Update and inform students of blended courses on any changes in teaching calendars, on the forum or on the course blog, via email etc.
