Parma, 16 February 2026 - Call for papers for the conference “Intangible Heritage Horizons and Echoes: Safeguarding the Invisible” to be held in Parma from May 29 to 31, organized by the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Cultural Industries, together with Heritage International Institute and Sciences Po.

Over recent decades, the concept of cultural heritage has gradually expanded, moving from the protection of tangible assets alone to the recognition of intangible practices, knowledge, and expressions transmitted by communities. It is a living and dynamic heritage, whose preservation must ensure its continuity without rigidifying it, enhancing the central role of the communities that preserve it.

Today, it is exposed to new threats, such as armed conflict, climate change, natural disasters, and globalization processes, which risk compromising cultural diversity and the transmission of traditions. Unlike tangible heritage, there are still no specific legal instruments for protection in crisis situations, making constant cooperation between institutions, scholars, and local communities necessary.

Digital technologies offer innovative opportunities for documentation and dissemination, but they also raise legal and ethical issues related to the management of cultural data and the risk of decontextualizing traditional knowledge. In this context, the initiative aims to combine scientific research and good operational practices to strengthen the protection of intangible cultural heritage as a factor for peace, sustainable development, and intercultural dialogue, including through digital tools such as the virtual museum.

Deadline for abstracts: 20 March 2026

September 26 and 27, 2022 - 10th Edition of the Conference "The Visible Translator"

On Monday, September 26 and Tuesday, September 27, the Miazzi Room of the Viale San Michele complex (Viale San Michele 9), hub of the Languages Unit of the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Industries, will host the X conference "The Visible Translator": two days entirely dedicated to translation, organized by the University of Parma as part of the European Day of Languages.

Since its inception, the project has aimed to train and inform students and professional translators in subjects related to professional preparation and the challenges posed by working practice in the field of translation.

Ten years after the edition that investigated "dangerous relations" between translator and author, the 2022 edition intends to focus on the relationship between the translator and his or her audience: contributions, from different cultural areas, will examine the freedoms that the translator can or must take to make the target text usable to the translation recipients, "domesticating" it to a greater or lesser extent. The shift of attention from the source text to the final product of the translation process, considered almost as a creation endowed with a life of its own, traces, moreover, the trajectory accomplished by translanguaging, which today is very attentive to the reception of translated works.

The first day of study will have, as per tradition, a predominantly literary imprint, with forays into the musical and cinematic scene. The second day, on the other hand, will deal with modern technologies used to make translations more easily accessible to target audiences, including those with special needs.

Monday, Sept. 26, at 4:45 p.m., in the Aula Magna of the University's central hub (Via Università, 12) will be held the presentation and screening of the film "D(IO)", accessible with audiodescription by the students of the Spanish Language course (CdS in Language Sciences and Cultural Studies for Special Needs), with the participation of the production of the Film - BARRACUDA STORIES - Trailer
